Candye Kane
Guitar’d and Feathered
REF 1127
So many reviews and articles on Candye Kane focus on her colorful past. While all that makes interesting reading, it doesn’t make a
good CD. Talent makes a good CD. And on Guitar’d and Feathered, her 8th release, Kane proves without a doubt that she has the talent
necessary to deliver the musical goods, not only as a singer, but as a songwriter and a producer as well.
She’s gathered a who’s who of guitar greats to accompany her on her musical journey: Junior Watson, Dave Alvin, Bob Margolin, Sue
Foley, Kid Ramos, Ana Popovic, Bob Brozman and Poppa Chubby all add their unique touches to Candye’s music. It takes strong,
accomplished musicians to back up such a plethora of talent, and Candye’s core band of Heine Anderson on guitar, world renown
bassist Bill Stuve (formerly with Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers) and Even Caleb on drums are more than up to the task. They
handle the job like the pro musicians they are. Kane’s long time partner in music and fun pianist, Sue Palmer, also makes outstanding
contributions to three tracks.
Always only and completely who she is, Candye gives all of herself and the experience she has gathered after over 20 years in the
music business, to this project. And since her life is made up of all kinds of experiences, so are Candye Kane CD’s. The blues on this
CD show Kane’s wide range of influences including: boogie woogie (Club Of The Foolish Hearts), gospel (Jesus and Muhammad), jump
blues (My Country Man), grinders (When I Put The Blues On You), country blues (Back When With My Old Friends), 1920’s style jazzy
blues (I’m Not Gonna Cry Today and Fine Brown Frame) and R&B (I’m Lucky). Kane wrote or co-wrote 5 of the 13 tunes, never losing
her wry take on life and its trials and joys.
Particularly amusing for those of us who follow the online ramblings and rantings on the Blues-L chat group is Candye’s dedication of
the original tune “I’m My Own Worst Enemy” ‘dedicated to my friends and adversaries on the Blues List,’ proof of an immense sense
of humor and the gift and grace to be able to laugh at herself.
A Candye Kane CD is not for the narrow minded (about blues or life in general), but who wants those people at the party anyway? For
those of us who love life and all its idiosyncrasies, Guitar’d and Feathered celebrates all that’s right with the blues.
