Miss Blues
Snapshot
(RBR 00019)
May I have a word with you? Bend your ear a tick? Are you looking to
score some amazing blues? I mean the real thing. I don't mean that wishy
washy stuff that pretends to be the real thing. You know what I'm talking
about. There aren't many voices out there that carry the sheer power and
velocity of Dorothy "Miss Blues" Ellis. As a matter of business,
there aren't many blues performers who could stand toe to blues toe with
her on a stage and not come away unscathed. Really when you think about
your archetypical shouting female blues vocalist, you are really thinking
of Miss Blues; whether you know it or not. I don't think I'm stretching
any truth by saying that she just plain knocks every song right out of the
ballpark with her gutsy, soul ripping performances. If you are looking for
the real thing, look no further. Miss Blues has got you covered.
There ain't no two ways about it. Miss Blues and the band deliver some
of the best renditions of some of my favorite blues tunes to be heard in
recent times. Check out the smoking version of "The Things I Used To
Do" or the amazing send up of "Sweet Home Chicago". Check
out the great work on the tune "Don't Let Your Left Hand Know"
or "At The Mill". Miss Blues takes these well-worn tunes and
makes them her own. For my money, which don't amount to much these days,
it doesn't get any better than Miss Blues turning in a ten plus minute
version of "Stormy Monday" complete with a sizzling monolog
introduction. Props go out to the amazing guitar work of Aynsley Lister
and outstanding B3 work from Tommy Carlyle.
Miss Blues is a treasure. Discover her for yourself.
