Joe Louis Walker
Pasa Tiempo
(Evidence 26126-2)

Pasa Tiempo is in Joe Louis Walker's own words, "a record of broader musical tastes." Consisting of nine tracks, the musical environment is one of variety, diversity and maybe a bit of the kitchen sink as well.

Never one to enjoy genre mixing or hopping, my trepidation at receiving this collection was evident upon receiving this disc for critique. Would you want to hear Koko Taylor singing Country and Western? I know in the past, artists of the caliber of Lonnie Johnson, T-Bone Walker, and even BB King, tried their hand at crossing blues and jazz together for a more mass appeal. While I personally like both Jazz and Blues, I feel that never the twain shall meet.

Pasa Tiempo is not a poor collection. It is polished and well intentioned. For my money though, I never felt the fire or passion of Joe Louis Walkers' previous blues sets. Crafted around a collection of top notch musicians such as Wallace Roney on trumpet, Leon Chandler on drums, Ernie Watts on sax, Bobby Goldberg on B3 and Phil Upchurch on electric guitar, I never felt swept away with the music. I listen to certain types of music for different reasons, but this one never moved me.

Evidence Records has had their finger on the pulse of the blues, jazz and rock on their previous recordings. The music has always been technically stunning, and I cannot blame them for this one misstep.

I will suggest to readers of this magazine, that there are plenty of other excellent blues artists and collections on Evidence as well as other labels that render this a moot point. Find Joe Louis Walkers' other exceptional sets and revere him for what he's known best for: A brilliant guitarist and singer of the blues.
