Jim Suhler has always been a treat to listen to, whether it's live or Memorex. Around Dallas and other such cool spots, Suhler has developed a magnificent reputation for great guitar playing and excellent hard driving blues jam. That being said, Dirt Road, the new CD from Suhler opens up some startling new musical ground for this artist and takes the listener to some previously unexplored plateaus. In short, this is a side of Jim that we haven't seen before and it is pretty damned amazing.
Fifteen tracks, counting a little swamp atmosphere up front. I think atmosphere is a perfect word to collectively connect the powerful intense and intimate compositions on this CD. Jim doesn't waste one second or one note that doesn't support the central vibe of this album. It is amazingly honest and heartfelt; extremely self reflective and sincere. Suhler is at the top of his game on this one, vocally and musically. Check out how he handles the tune "Country Girl" or the quiet, subtle, almost understated magnificence of the tune "Church Bell Blues". Truly, this is one CD Suhler fans (and new Suhler fans) will be talking about for quite some time.
I think if I had to pick favorites, and I do, I would go with the little vignette pieces Suhler has sprinkled throughout the release. They are these great little mini songs that really capture some remarkable qualities. Check out "Holly Ridge", "Spanish Flang Dang", or the wonderful "Lauri" for a good example of what I am talking about. They are short, sweet and concentrated. It's like a great piece of sushi; small but ultimately satisfying. They pack a powerful punch. Also worth noting is the ethereal take on "My Morning Prayer", a beautiful song that really captures your attention.
No doubt about it, Suhler shines on this whole CD. It's clearly a labor of love for him and it shows in the production. If you are a long time Suhler fan, be prepared for a whole new side of Jim. If you are not a long time Suhler fan, chances are when you hear Dirt Road, you will become one.
