Kid Ramos
(Evidence ECD 26104-2)
Confession: I really dig the Thunderbirds: especially
with Kid Ramos on the lead guitar. He brings such enthusiasm and energy to
his performances; he's a joy to watch live. Thankfully, I can report that
the new CD captures all of the reasons I go out of my way to see The T
Birds. Not only that, it showcases incredible vocal performances from very
special guests. T Birds front man, Kim Wilson turns in several fantastic
songs, alongside James Harman, Willie Chambers, Lynwood Slim, Janiva
Magness and Los Lobos member Cesar Rosas. Now if you can get past the
grand guitar work and the terrific vocal performances, there are also
unbelievable horn arrangements and ivory ticklings in the mix. There are
15 solid tracks on this puppy and not a bad one among them.
Ramos has a knack for production and the best evidence
of that is in the overall quality of the songs. Kid makes wise choices in
his presentation. The lead guitar is not center stage. Check out the mix
on the Dixon tune "Three Hundred Pounds of Joy." The horn
section shines while the guitar provides a subtle texture to the
background. The jumping Ray Agee song, "Leave Me Alone" with a
searing vocal performance by Willie Chambers and a great organ solo from
Dave Mathews, is truly inspired and almost worth the price of the CD all
by itself. When Ramos does take the spotlight, he owns it. Listen to his
ax work on the McCain tune, "The Jig Is Up," with vocals
skillfully delivered by Janiva Magness. He tackles the strings with fire
and grace; raw but yet very refined. This one is a keeper.
