The Forever Fabulous Chickenhawks
All Star-Review (CD 1)
All-Star Review Live (CD 2)
(CSP Records 1016 & 1015) (JSECD21201)

These two releases are a splendid introduction to the uninitiated whom have never attended the once a year spectacle that is the Forever Fabulous Chickenhawks; a group so large they barely fit on one stage. These two CDs, one live and one studio, should give you a notion why the Chickenhawks are such a charm. The studio album showcases the Grammy winning songwriting skills of Al 'TNT' Braggs. The synthesis of the group as a collective voice is apparent in most of the twelve tracks and despite the fact that they only jam once a year, these guys are at the top of their game. Tracks like "Blues of the Month Club" and "You're the Only One For Me" harness the individual elements into a well-honed ensemble. The sheer volcanic power of Luther Kent's shouting vocals coupled with the energetic fireworks of the Legendary White Trash Horns and the smooth soulful crooning from master songster Al "TNT" Braggs make for a terrific gumbo of sound. Both CDs skillfully spotlight the abilities of Kent and Braggs while catering to the formidable horn section. The Live release is a virtual smorgasbord of classic R&B standards and hard driving blues. Vocally, Kent pulls out all the stops on tunes like "Hootchie Kootchie Man" and "Sick and Tired." Equally impressive are the duets between Kent and Braggs. Though very different singers, the two balance each other in an interesting way, giving songs like the Hayes gem "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby" a heartfelt cadence, robust and yet remarkably subtle. "Cadillac" Jack Calmes is a good lead guitarist, but an even better organizer. He founded the Chickenhawks in 1980 and continues to steer the group. His talents as a leader and a musician are clearly on display in both CDs. Both releases were originally only available at the Chickenhawk performances but are now being offered through CSP. The deal should confirm what a few already knew: The Chickenhawks are fun and a great listen.
