RL Griffin
Too Hot To Stop
(Self Produced)

For those who have had the pleasure of watching the "Right Reverend of the Blues" while he holds court over the crowds at RL Blues Palace II, this CD just reinforces something we already knew: Griffin is an amazing performer who knows the ins and outs of dazzling an audience. For the rest of the free world who has never ventured through the doors of Dallas' best kept secret, this CD will serve as a great introduction to all the reasons RL is a legend around these parts. This self produced release showcases Griffin at his best. There are some new songs, as well as re-releases of some of his harder to find tunes and a few other surprises. One of the primary elements of RL's charm resides in his incredible vocals and his heartfelt, soulful delivery. His voice is expressive and powerful. When he croons the Hayes/Porter masterpiece "When Something's Wrong With My Baby," he conveys that allusive mix of the strains of tenderness and the sweet undercurrent of longing. His interpretation on the Rush tune "Playing Me Crazy" accurately paints the musical picture of a man being done wrong and the accompanying paranoia that ensues. Griffin covers some well-known tunes but adds his own unique sound to each one. Check out how he handles BB King on the track "Woke Up This Morning." He also does an outstanding job on the Al "TNT" Braggs composition "Bringing My Love Down." Beyond the covers, RL tackles some of his own songs. One of my favorite tunes from the recent KNON CD "Can I Talk To You" is presented here; with a great little give and take between Griffin and another double crossing liaison.

"Too Hot To Handle" is an apt title for a wonderful CD. It's a great collection of the Reverend's finest recordings and a good place to start if you are looking for some of the magic.
