Finis Tasby
Jump Children!
(Evidence EDC26097-2)

The first thing you should do after you buy this disc is to read the liner notes. If you're just sampling this CD at your friendly local record shop, you should do the same. Then you will be aware from the start that this is not just another attempt at retro, this is the real thing. Tasbys' credentials run back a ways and his path has crossed those of many Blues Masters along the way. Evidence, and producer Randy Chortkoff, have assembled a stellar group of musicians to support Tasbys outstanding vocals. These talented musicians, tops in their craft in Southern California, give Tasby plenty of room to work. Guitarists for this disc are Rick Holstrom, Kid Ramos and Coco Montoya. Lester Butler is featured on harp on three songs, his final recordings before his passing. The rhythm section of Larry Taylor on bass (upright and Fender) and Richard Innes on drums provide the foundation. Rob Rios completes the band on piano.

Songs are selected from a diverse group of writers including Lowell Fulson and Jimmy McCracklin, Little Walter and Paul DeLay. Great cuts include McCracklins' "I Just Got To Know", DeLays' "I Missed You Bad", and the title track "Jump Children". Tasby sings them all with the authority that comes with having been there. In fact, you can go right back there with him, song after song. The cover of the disc shows Tasby in a corny 1961 pose, snapping his fingers. Don't be deceived. This is contemporary as well as classic. A nice combination, if you ask me.
