Hash Brown
Texas Blues Review
(CBD 29108)
One of the best things about the man who
calls himself "Hash Brown" is his instinct for good music. No where is that more
evident than on this Cannonball release. For all those unfortunate souls who can't make it
out to one of Hash Man's infamous Dallas jam sessions, this is the next best thing; a
chance to catch him doing what he does best with a talented bunch of friends. Fourteen
superior tracks of quality jam from the crème de la crème of artists such as the
fantastic Sam Myers, the late, great ZuZu Bollin, the soulful Darrel Nulisch, and the
mystical Big Al Dupree. There are also incredible performances from folks like Matt McCabe
(Roomful of Blues) on the keys, and Kaz Kazanoff working the sax. If I am leaving names
out, it's only because there are so many great musicians on hand; it would take all night
to name them all. Therein lies the beauty of a CD like this; you got a lot of talent here!
Hash puts it all together and serves up some flavorful main courses. Smoking Blues
peppered with some swing and just a dash of soul tastes great this way. The whole disc
really has a great feel to it; as if you had stepped back in time. Check out the wonderful
tone of Sam Myers, both vocally and also on the harp, on the song "Sad and
Lonesome." Listen to the boogie cool beat pushing the horn section on the Darrel
Nulisch Contribution, "I Sat and Cried." There is joyful, smooth as glass music
making here with master craftsmen. Hash Brown gets kudos around this town for a very good
reason, he knows his stuff. A good cook knows how to use choice ingredients and how hot to
make the pan to get the chow to come out delicious. This CD is proof positive that if the
blues were a cuisine, Hash Brown knows his way around the kitchen.
