KNON Texas Blues Radio Vol. 2
A Dallas Fort Worth Collection
One of the major perks of being a blues
reviewer is that every so often, you get a chance to listen to a collection like this one.
The first volume of this series sold out faster than a Furby the day before Christmas and
this sequel is likely to pull a similar stunt. All of the artists included are local to
the Dallas Ft. Worth area. Most of the tracks come from hard to find self produced CDs. We
are talking about a mile long blues buffet with big, buttery crab legs, folks; this one
has it all and it's for a good cause. Lest you think my analysis of this limited edition
release is little more than a tendentious exercise, let me put your mind at ease with the
some of the incredible talent lined up for your enjoyment here. Jake Crawford starts us
off the right way with "Shaken Vodka Martini," an inspired instrumental shuffle.
Kenny Kay and Storm Warning pull out some mean slide work on their contributed tune
"I Told You So." Dru Webber shows off superior ax grinding skills on
"Walkin'," while James Hinkle croons a swinging "Lucky Charm." I don't
need to tell you about tracks like "Doncha' Hang Around My Door" by Jim Suhler
and Monkey Beat. If you have seen the man in action around town, you already know this is
a good one. Likewise for the often imitated but never to be outdone, Right Reverend R. L.
Griffin and his searing contribution "Can I Talk To You." You have mystical
tracks from the likes of Randy McAllister, Cookie McGee, the incredible Joe Jonas, Gregg
Smith, Joey Love and Blues Xpress, Mike Morgan & Lee McBee, Pat Boyack and the
Prowlers: it's a virtual Who's Who of DFW Blues! For blues lovers, this CD is a dream come
true. For those of you who are just discovering the vast, wonderfully diverse blues scene
we have here, this is a golden opportunity to listen to a superb sampling of what is out
there. But enough of my endless approbation; if you aren't already out the door to grab
this one, you had better check your pulse.
