The Love Dogs
Heavy Petting
(Tone-Cool 34047-1168-2)
I first heard the Love Dogs on CD a couple
of years ago and was very impressed. I am more impressed with this, their second disc,
than the first.
The very first track had my complete attention, and I was hooked again. It's a
six-piece band with horns and humor to spare. They write a lot of their own stuff, six to
be exact, with vocalist E. Duato Scheer getting at least partial credit on all of them.
"Lock You Up" is the first track and hits you with all instruments a'blazing.
It's stuff like this that has me wanting to see these guys live in a bad way. "Hot
Weather Blues" hooked me with the line "It ain't hot weather that makes me stick
to you". Everybody sing along with the "Heeeeey baby!" line in this one and
let's have some fun! "Too Old To Die Young" must have been written with those
approaching middle age (boy do I feel sorry for THOSE old farts) in mind. It's funny and
lively and swingin'. "Something's Wrong" does for this disc what "I've
Learned To Live Without You" did for the first. It's the serious track that lets you
know that it's not all fun and games in the world of Dogs. The instrumentals, handled by
the bands' two ladies on piano and sax respectively, are outstanding. "Who Got You
Mama?" takes the party to New Orleans with a Professor Longhair flair. This is an
entertaining disc, a great band, and it's nice to think we may have this kind of talent
around for a while.
