Anson Funderburgh & The Rockets featuring Sam Myers
Change in My Pocket
(Bullseye Blues J11661-9573-2A)

What do you when your band has already won eight Blues Foundation W.C. Handy Awards since forming back in 1981? Well, if you are Anson Funderburgh, you record a new album for a new label and sit back and wait for Handy Award #9.

Anson, along with his wife, Renee and Sam Myers have teamed up for 12 typically well done songs on their new CD, Change in My Pocket. This CD, the first for their new label, Bullseye Blues, features 6 original tunes along with covers of six rarely heard songs.

All songs feature Anson's understated guitar. It is so nice to hear a player who strives for the most meaning from each note instead of how many notes can be played in an attempt for some meaning. At the same time 'Sweet' Sammy Myers continues to sound younger and more vibrant with each CD he shares with The Rockets.

From original songs like the uplifting title track, "Change in My Pocket", to the 'life on the road' track "Highway Man" you know you are listening to a veteran band at their peak. "Hula Hoop" is a fun instrumental by Anson. Sam Myers has two original compositions in "Single Again" and "Things Have Changed" that remind you of Sam's Mississippi Delta roots. Covers of Buddy Guy's "$100 Bill" and Jimmy Rogers' "What Have I Done" give this set a well-rounded showcase of what good blues is all about.

The only thing more fun than listening to a new Anson & The Rockets CD is listening to them perform those same songs live on stage. Whether you choose to see the band perform one of their 200+ a year live shows or take the CD back to your home, an evening with Anson & The Rockets featuring Sam Myers is an evening well spent.
