~ Turnaround Blues ~

Here are a couple of cool turnarounds you can play on the last two bars of a 12 bar blues. The first turnaround has a descending chromatic line on the first string (high E). After voicing the G7 chord, proceed with the Bb13 (9) chord on the 8th fret (C note) down to the Am9 chord on the 7th fret (B note) and the Ab13 (9) chord on the 6th fret (Bb note).

The Ab13 (9) is a tritone substitution for the dominant five chord and can be used in place of the D7#9 chord in example two. The second turnaround is based on the “I-VI-II-V” chord progression and has a strong V-I resolution (D7#9 to G13).

Turnaround #1
G7 / Bb13 (9) / | Am9 / Ab13 (9) / ||

Turnaround #2
G13 / E7#9 / | Am7 / D7#9 / ||

Turnaround Chords – Key of G

* The numbers following the chord letter are where you fret your fingers on the string. If there is a "0" then the string is open, if there is an "x" then no note is played.

Enjoy, and always keep your ears open.
